Hot Buttered VRUM – like Boozy, Cookie Dough in a Mug

Hot Buttered VRUM, classic wintery cocktail.

This classic dates all the way back to the 1600s – and one sip in, you’ll understand why Hot Buttered VRUM (in all its forms) is still around. Think warm, boozy cookie dough in a mug. The magic starts with a spiced buttered sugar blend – rich butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, and a hint of vanilla – basically the definition of cozy. It’s smooth, indulgent, and just the right amount of nostalgic.

Now here’s where it gets fun: those warm baking spices pair beautifully with the tropical notes of our Gold Reserve VRUM, creating a cocktail that feels equal parts fireside comfort and island escape. It’s the kind of drink that makes you look like you’ve got a full cocktail bar tucked into your kitchen.

Side note: Lance, our master distiller, has been whipping up his version of this buttered batter and gifting it at Christmastime for decades. Some traditions are just too good to mess with.

How to Make Hot Buttered VRUM

Ingredients

  • 2 oz. VRUM gold
  • 6 oz. hot water
  • Cinnamon stick, garnish
  • 2 TBSP spiced butter batter*

Spiced Butter Batter Ingredients

  • 1 stick softened unsalted butter (4 oz)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¾  cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp clove
  • Pinch of salt

To make spiced buttered batter: In a mixing bowl, combine butter and vanilla. Add in the sugar and mix well. Then add the rest of the spices, beating until well combined.

Remaining batter can be stored in airtight container in refrigerator for future use.

Steps for the Hot Buttered VRUM

Preheat a coffee mug with hot water. Give it a minute, then discard hot water.

Combine the VRUM gold with 2 TB of spiced butter batter (about 1 oz).

Once concoction is well mixed and hot, add EnGIN.

Top with hot water and stir until ingredients are well mixed.

Garnish with cinnamon stick, sit back and enjoy.
