A classic gimlet already knows how to keep its cool, but adding fresh basil and suddenly things get a little more interesting. This Basil Gimlet is bright, crisp, and unapologetically fresh – the kind of cocktail that tastes like your herb garden got dressed up for happy hour. Our botanical EnGIN shines here, where the peppery, sweet notes of the herb pull out the hidden nuances of the spirit.
The secret? Treat the basil gently. A light muddle releases those fragrant oils without turning the drink into a leafy science experiment. The result is clean, vibrant, and ridiculously refreshing with a smooth, herbaceous finish.
Perfect for sunny brunches, patio hangs, or easing into golden hour, this cocktail proves that a few fresh ingredients and a well-built spirit can take a classic from familiar to unforgettable. Cheers!

Ingredients for Basil Gimlet
- 3 oz EnGIN
- 1 1/2 oz fresh squeezed Lime juice (about 1.5 limes)
- 1 oz Simple Syrup
- 12 organic basil leaves
- Garnish: 1 basil leaf / per cocktail
Steps for Basil Gimlet Cocktail
1
Place 12 of the basil leaves in the palm of your hand and give it a hard slap. (This helps release essential oils and intensifies aromatic compounds without bruising the leaf, which boosts flavor without causing bitterness.) Then place the leaves in the base of a cocktail shaker.
2
Add the simple syrup and lime juice to the shaker, then pummel the basil leaves with a muddler to release more oils without shredding the leaves. Add the gin to the shaker along with the ice.
3
Cap your shaker and shake – about 20 seconds. Then strain into a pre-chilled coupe or martini glass. (Or double strain if pieces of basil are floating around in your glass.)
4
Place the remaining 2 basil leaves in your hands and clap your hands together, releasing their oils. Garnish each cocktail with a basil leaf and serve immediately.
NOTES
The Slap Technique: Don’t just drop the leaf in—give it a wake-up call. Clapping a fresh basil leaf between your palms (or giving it a quick “slap”) is the secret to a professional-grade cocktail. This gentle impact releases the aromatic essential oils and sweet compounds tucked inside the herb without rupturing the leaves so aggressively that they turn bitter.
By “waking up” the basil this way, you’re intensifying the scent and flavor for a brighter, more immersive experience. Whether it’s muddled or used as a garnish, a smacked leaf ensures that every sip starts with a fresh, botanical aroma that perfectly complements the nuanced notes of our EnGIN.
Chill the Glass: Place your glass in the freezer for 10-15 minutes before serving for the best experience. A stemmed glass (like the coupe or martini glass) keeps the drink cold without ice and showcases the vibrant color of the cocktail.
Double Strain: Use a fine-mesh strainer to ensure no tiny pieces of muddled basil end up in your glass, creating a clean finish.
